Laundry Room & Kitchen by Kuche & Bagno. Leicestershire, 2018.

SYCAMORE LAUNDRY

PROJECT BRIEF

The aim was to create a functional, practical space, which needed to serve many functions for this busy family including the formation of a new laundry room as well as an extension to the kitchen.

As the client was extending their kitchen into their utility room there was a  primary requirement to make the new laundry room a very practical and functional room.  With two daughters both very keen on sport, there is constantly gym wear and school uniform to wash while the need was strong for extra storage for the girls to tidy away their swimming and sports bags.

A small dog, as well as lots of muddy boots to clean, meant that a large sink was key in this utility design, so a Belfast sink was specified along with the Hansgrohe pull-out tap, which is great for cleaning mucky things as not only is it a pull-out it also incorporates a button switch to turn it on and off.

For the work surfaces, the Encore worktop with its solid surface provides excellent durability with matching wall cladding behind the sink to allow for any splashes to easily be wiped down while the encore splash back provides a lovely detail and also allows the client to use it for plants without worrying about leaving a mark.

Neat low level pull outs were installed beside the laundry appliances – these are a great solution for storing washing detergents and cleaning products. There was also a requirement from the client to incorporate some open space into the design which could either be used for a dog bed or to store shoes and this also allowed us to utilise the awkward angle in the room.

Sometimes there isn’t sufficient room for the adequate drying in a laundry room or it is completely overlooked but this design utilised the amazing high ceilings of the room to incorporate a pull-up and pull-down clothes rail along with an extra fixed rail above the sink so that wet swimming costumes could dry into the sink.  The fabulously slender Bisque radiators not only fit in nicely with the high ceilings of the room but also provide a great heat output to help keep the large space warm and dry the clothes.

The design included a neat solution for the space between the existing kitchen and the new utility which allowed for a much larger fridge and freezer within the space along with some additional storage for gym bags.

It was important to ensure the new kitchen extension doors complemented the existing shaker-style kitchen doors and the painted J-profile kitchen in anthracite gives a lovely silk finish while we continued the theme with a limestone colour in the new laundry room.

"We asked Lisa and Hannah to provide us with a more versatile space that would meet our needs - we are a normal busy family with sport kits that need a place to be stored and a place to let swimming clothes and equipment dry ready to be used daily ."
