My Sauna Journey: Creating a Personal Sanctuary

Updated: Oct 20

My sauna journey began in 2021, at the end of my garden. That's where I built my own traditional Finnish sauna, a haven of heat and tranquillity nestled amongst the trees. It's become my daily ritual, a place to escape, unwind, and reconnect with myself, all while surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. This personal haven has truly enriched my ongoing wellness journey, and now I'm thrilled to share this passion with others.

Sharing the Heat: Designing Your Dream Sauna

Inspired by my own transformative experience, I now offer sauna design and build services to my clients. It's incredibly rewarding to help others create their own personal sanctuaries, tailored to their individual needs and preferences. Whether it's a cosy garden retreat or a luxurious indoor spa, I believe everyone deserves to experience the joys of a traditional sauna.

Why Traditional? The Benefits of a Classic Sauna

Unlike infrared saunas, which use lamps, my sauna (and the ones I build!) uses heated rocks and water to create a wave of humid heat that penetrates deep into the body. It's an intense, immersive experience that leaves me feeling truly rejuvenated. And, of course, it's clad in beautiful juniper wood.

The Juniper Touch: Nature’s Gift

The choice of juniper for the sauna walls wasn't just an aesthetic one. This fragrant wood brings its own unique benefits to the experience. As the wood heats up, it releases aromatic oils with calming and purifying properties. These oils can help alleviate stress, improve respiratory function, and even promote healthier skin. The natural aroma of juniper also creates a wonderfully calming atmosphere.

Nature's Therapy: A Connection to the Outdoors

Having my sauna in the garden amplifies the experience tenfold. Through the glass panel, I watch birds flitting amongst the branches, squirrels scampering along fences, and even the occasional fox strolling by. This connection with nature deepens the sense of relaxation and peace.

My Sauna Ritual: Embracing the Heat

I aim for 70-80 degrees Celsius, a heat that I've grown accustomed to with daily use. Inside, I often elevate my legs to boost circulation and reduce any swelling. This simple act, combined with the heat, has done wonders for my skin and overall tolerance to high temperatures.

Beyond Relaxation: The Holistic Benefits

The benefits of my sauna routine extend far beyond simple relaxation. I've found it improves my circulation, enhances my skin health, and even boosts my mood. It's a true sanctuary for both body and mind.

Tips for Your Sauna Journey: Making the Most of Your Experience

Hydration is key: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your sauna session.

Listen to your body: If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, exit the sauna immediately.

Cool down gradually: Avoid sudden changes in blood pressure after your session.

Enhance the experience: Add a few drops of essential oils to the water for aromatherapy.

Creating Your Own Sanctuary: The Path to Wellness

My garden sauna has become an essential part of my life, a personal retreat where I can embrace the heat, connect with nature, and prioritise my well-being. If you're seeking a truly transformative wellness experience, I highly recommend creating your own sauna sanctuary.
